The MUAC Z-Score tape resembles a traditional tape measure that provides not only mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) but color-coded indicators that demarcate how far the child’s MUAC deviates from children of similar age, gender, ethnicity, geographic origin, etc (i.e. their z-score). No secondary reference materials are required, thus enabling providers to rapidly screen children (2 mo – 18 yrs) at the point-of-care for signs of malnutrition and obesity.
The Z-Score tape has been used on nearly 2,000 children at Children’s Mercy under an IRB protocol.
